Intern Program

Periodically the Office of the State Actuary (OSA) provides an opportunity for a select college student to learn about the field of actuarial science by participating in our actuarial internship program. The internship typically begins in May or June and lasts up to three months.

As an OSA intern, you’ll receive compensation, support office work products, and gain valuable hands-on experience and exposure to actuarial work. Don’t just take our word on it, here are testimonials from some of our past interns.

Trent Alsin, 2013 Intern

Picture of Trent Alsin. The internship at OSA definitely exceeded my expectations. I did not anticipate such a high level of interaction and teamwork with the other staff members, and I had the privilege of watching and learning from many different people in the office.  With the guidance and assistance of the OSA team, I learned far more about the actuarial field than I believed I would at the beginning of the summer internship.  Additionally, the internship gave me the chance to work as part of a close-knit, interdependent team to create work that is the production of the entire office. It has been an extremely valuable experience for me.

I would say that the work that I enjoyed the most was creating and assembling data for the Demographic Experience Study.  While it is interesting to check and verify data in spreadsheets that other people have created, it was more rewarding to be able to create something from scratch (with a good deal of assistance) that I know will be used at some point.

I am studying economics at Whitworth University and I haven’t yet decided what I want to do after college.  This internship gave me a great opportunity to explore one of the potential areas I could enter after completing my studies.  I really didn’t know much about actuarial science before the internship, but OSA has helped me to greatly increase my knowledge in this area.  I would highly recommend this internship to any student that would like to learn more about the actuarial field through direct experience.

Michael Harbour, 2007 Intern, Current Actuary

Photo of Michael Harbour. The OSA internship program exceeded my expectations in terms of compensation and one-on-one training. As an intern, my primary responsibilities included data processing and compiling valuation results.  I applied knowledge I learned in statistics courses and definitely used my Excel skills.

This internship program provided some of the elementary concepts of actuarial science, such as probability and financial mathematics. OSA has lofty expectations for interns that will undoubtedly prepare you for entry level positions.
