Picture-in-Picture (PIP) ASL Interpretation FAQs

Who decides which hearings get PIP ASL interpretation?
PIP ASL interpretation is a service provided in partnership with TVW. Once weekly agendas are published, TVW determines which committee hearings will be broadcast on TV including which hearings will feature the PIP interpretation. TVW publishes this information to the scheduling page of their website. The information can also be found on the schedules page of the Legislature's website. Only one Senate and one House meeting per committee timeslot will broadcast on TVW with PIP interpretation during the pilot, no more than four per chamber per day.

Can I request a hearing have PIP interpretation?
Requesting a hearing to have PIP interpretation is not currently an option. This is a pilot project for the 2024 legislative session, and our infrastructure can only accommodate one PIP broadcast for each chamber during standard committee timeslots. Should the Legislature continue providing this service in the future, we can look at how to accommodate such requests.

Can I request PIP interpretation be shown in the hearing room?
This interpretation service is provided by TVW to their broadcast, and we do not have a way to show their feed in our hearing rooms. If you are requesting PIP interpretation be shown in the hearing room to help with testifying, please contact the Senate Systems Analyst for Accessibility, Bao Xiong (Senate.HRO@leg.wa.gov), or the House Technology & Facilities Director, Kyle Overmiller (Kyle.Overmiller@leg.wa.gov), to get connected with an interpreter to assist with your testimony. Please note, at least 72 hours (3 business days) advance notice is needed to facilitate interpretation requests.

You may view the TVW PIP broadcast from the hearing room by streaming TVW's feed from your personal device - be sure to have everything muted.
