Emailing a legislator
Follow these steps to send a message to a Representative or Senator.
1. Choose a legislator and go to their email form
From the list of all legislators, find the legislator you want to contact in one of two ways:
- Choose a member's name from the default "Member Photos" list to go to their individual page and click the “Email” button in the Contact section.
- Click the "Member List" option to see a list of all members without photos and click the "Email Member" button.
2. Verify your district
In "Step 1" of the form, enter your address in the “Verify your legislative district” section, then choose “Verify District.” Your district will appear under the button.
If you are in the legislator's district, you’ll see the district number.
If you aren’t in their district, you have 3 options:
- Choose that you think the system made a mistake and you are in the legislator’s district
- Email the legislator anyway
- Choose one of your district’s legislator to email instead
Then choose if you'd like to send a copy of your message to the other legislators in the district.
3. Choose other legislator to receive a copy
In "Step 2" of the form, click the "Show / hide legislators" button to select other legislators from outside the chosen district you would like to receive a copy of your message.
Check the box next to each legislator you would like to receive a copy of the message as a CC.
The legislators you select will appear below the list in the "Copies will go to" section.
4. Enter your contact information
In "Step 3" you’ll need to provide your:
- First and last name
- Email address
- Phone number (optional)
Enter your email address a second time in the “Confirm Email” field.
5. Write your message to the legislator
You’ll need to fill out both the “Subject” and “Message” fields.
To include a comment on a bill or an initiative, enter the bill or initiative number and choose “Search.” The bill’s or initiative's description will appear. You can also choose your position on the bill: support, oppose, or neutral.
If desired, you may attach up to two files of limited total size and file types to the message:
- Click the Choose Files button
- Browse to the needed files and select them
6. Choose whether you want a response from the legislator and a copy of your message sent back to you
Select Yes or No if you would like a response from the primary recipient of the message (the legislator listed at the top of the form).
Select Yes or No to send a copy of your message to your email address. This defaults to Yes.
7. Submit your message
Click the "I'm not a robot" checkbox.
Choose “Send email” to send your message.
After you submit, you’ll see a page with the information you entered. You can print this page if you want to keep a copy of your message.
