Legislative Internship Program
House Photography Internship

Program:

A full time photography internship is open to all students who are enrolled in Washington colleges or universities during the Legislative sessions of the Washington State House of Representatives. The intern will work Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and may have occasional evening assignments.

Intern Duties:

The intern will photograph members of the House of Representatives in their various legislative duties. These may include events with visiting constituents, visiting school groups, high school pages, other interns, candid House floor and committee action, and other similar photographic assignments as they arise. The intern may occasionally photograph House members with the Governor and other elected officials. For this reason, it is imperative that the intern be prepared to wear appropriate professional attire.

All camera gear (Professional Nikon Digital), supplies, lighting equipment and other essential tools are furnished. Images will be produced in digital color. Work will be assigned on a daily basis. The House Photography intern will be assigned a PC workstation installed with Photoshop CS, ACDsee Pro, and other image managing software applications. The intern will also be required to work with additional digital imaging equipment (i.e.; film and flatbed scanners, dry process color printers).

The intern will work directly with the assistant House photographer, the digital lab technician, and the legislative office assistant. All will report periodically to the Supervisor of Photography Services on the intern's progress. The intern will generate a portfolio of typical images before the end of the legislative session to be reviewed by House photography staff and the intern's faculty sponsor or advisor. The intern will also attend weekly seminars for legislative interns on applicable topics as announced.

Necessary experience and skills:

A competency in advanced camera equipment operation and principles, color photography theory and concepts, digital photography (pixel relationships, scanning, Adobe Photoshop manipulation, etc.) is necessary. This work is journalism-related. Having experience in photographing a variety of human subjects for publication on deadline is highly desirable. Examples may include high school and college photography course work, student newspaper, or yearbook. Intern must demonstrate good interpersonal skills, be able to receive directions and corrections in a positive manner, and handle pressure situations in a charged business atmosphere. Teamwork and cooperation are essential. The intern should be pursuing a career in photography, visual communications, or be interested in exploring such a career path.

Compensation/Credit:

Monthly compensation for this internship is $1290. Course credit or co-op education credits are the student's responsibility and are arranged individually between the student and the school. Housing is the responsibility of the intern; however, some assistance finding housing may be available. A car is not required for this internship.

House Photography Services is a non-partisan support staff within the House Administration under the supervision of the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives. Interns, along with other house photography employees, will serve all House members equally without regard to party or caucus affiliation. All photography images that the intern will generate will remain the property of the Washington State House of Representatives. However, the intern may freely make copies for the required portfolio.
