We are the Legislature’s nonpartisan performance auditors. Our assignments come from the Legislature through policy and budget bills; all members have a role in deciding what we study. Our work informs its policy making and oversight responsibilities.
No matter the question, we present clear answers based on independent research and rigorous analysis.

What we study
From taxes to transportation, environment to education, if it happens in state government, we can evaluate it.

What does nonpartisan mean?
Our role is to evaluate performance. This might include whether a program or policy achieved the Legislature’s goals. We do not take or advocate any policy positions.
About us
We are a small office with about 30 full-time staff. Our backgrounds are varied: our staff include economists, communicators, mathematicians, anthropologists, political scientists, historians, and more.
We value respect, excellence, collaboration, improvement, and humor.
- Respect: We are honest, fair, and considerate. We value the Legislature as the policy-making body we serve and the agencies as professionals under real constraints.
- Excellence: We hold ourselves to high standards and use methods that are ambitious and sound.
- Collaboration: We value and seek our colleagues’ diverse ideas and skills. Our work is a product of the office as a whole.
- Improvement: We learn and adapt, growing from our experiences.
- Humor: We keep perspective and take the work seriously, but not ourselves.
We are nationally recognized, winning multiple awards for impact, presentation, and methods.
