Intern program
Periodically the Office of the State Actuary (OSA) provides an opportunity for a select college student to learn about the field of actuarial science by participating in our actuarial internship program. The internship typically begins in May or June and lasts up to three months.
As an OSA intern, you’ll receive compensation, support office work products, and gain valuable hands-on experience and exposure to actuarial work.
Don’t just take our word for it; below is a testimonial from our most recent intern.
I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to intern at OSA. I was introduced to a plethora of retirement systems, plans, history, and more that I did not even know existed prior to this summer. My time at OSA showed me that the work the office does—across all teams and projects—is important.
My first couple of weeks were primarily focused on learning about pensions and the office, along with some tasks to update spreadsheets. Once I had gotten more accustomed to the work, I was working with the data, looking for trends, and trying to make sense of what I was seeing. As a colleague told me, I got to experience both the art and science of actuarial work. I especially enjoyed working on the various assumptions in the upcoming Demographic Experience Study. Each assumption came with its own story (so to say) and helped me grasp the complexity of actuarial work.
OSA has an incredible office culture. Everyone on the actuarial team was welcoming to me from my first day, and very willing to make time to talk through projects and explain more about the office. I made many good memories and picked up many valuable skills (especially in Excel!) that I will be able to use going forward. I would certainly recommend interning at OSA to anyone that is interested in the actuarial field. I came here to learn, and I believe I was rewarded beyond what I could have imagined.
